The 5K Championships moved North East to the green confines of Sunderland’s Silksworth Sports Complex, for a superb evening of running on a warm summer’s night. The race was on paths over a testing, undulating course.
Superbly organised by Kevin Carr, the event also included the North East 5K Championships, with Bill McGuirk presenting those medals.
The women’s winner was Elswick Harriers’ Justina Heslop, who led from gun to tape in a time of 16.28. 2nd lady was Vale Royal’s Amelia Petit in 17.14, with 3rd place woman, Durham City’s Rosie Smith, finishing in 17.16. Medals were also awarded to the first 3 women’s teams; these were:
1) Tyne Bridge
2) Morpeth Harriers
3) Durham City
In the men’s race, it was no surprise that Leeds City’s Carl Smith won in a superb time of 14.37. 25 seconds behind Carl was Morpeth’s Lewis Timmins, with Durham City’s Daniel Jenkin 3rd in 14.56. The men’s team medals were awarded to:
1) Morpeth
2) Gateshead
3) Tyne Bridge
All the Northern Athletics medals were presented by President Mrs Jean Simpson, MBE. Kevin Carr confirmed that they will host the 5K Championships for a further 2 years.
