Murray Lamden former Manx race walking international collapsed and died while walking his dog last Monday. Murray was an outstanding race walker and represented Great Britain on four occasions at various distances, he also held many of the Manx race walking records. He represented the Isle of Man at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in the 30km walk where he finished eighth in a time of 2hr 22min 18sec. Murray was also a British record holder over this distance.
He retired from walking in 1983 because of a back injury and took up running and was one of the island’s leading distance runners, holding several age-group records.
In latter years he was ever-present at local athletics events with his cameras and a smile. Murray was a great ambassador for Manx athletics his website was often the first port of call if you wanted race reports of photos.

A celebration of Murray’s life will take place between 5.30pm and 8pm on Wednesday 3rd May at the National Sports Centre Cafe in Douglas to which all who knew him from all walks of life are very welcome. It will be an informal atmosphere with light refreshments and some photographs and memories from other people.
