Northern Athletics Officials’ Association

The Northern Athletics Officials’ Association (NAOA) is an independent association of Technical Officials involved in supporting North of England athletics meetings. We are affiliated to England Athletics and the association is open to licenced Technical Officials, including those in training.

The aims of the NAOA are to:

• Act at all times in the best interests of its Members.
• Encourage a high standard of officiating.
• Raise the status of Technical Officials.
• Represent the views of Members on issues affecting Technical Officials.
• Improve the standard of facilities provided for Technical Officials.
• Assist in the training of Technical Officials.

NOAO has been in existence for many years and can trace its history back to the late 1990’s. NAOA provides advice , supports training and on a bi-annual basis distributes UKA rule books to its members. NOAO organises an annual conference where members can meet in a less formal enviroment than that of an athletics meeting.

NOAO is managed by a General Committee with committee members being elected annually at the AGM, which is usually combined with the annual Conference.

Annual Conference

The 2022 AGM and Conference was held at the Holiday Inn, Brighouse on Sunday 2 October 2022.

Guest Speakers:

Chris Moss (UKA, Interim Development Director) he provided an update on UKA’s Officials Strategy “a year on after its launch”

Marc Ritchie (EA, Technical Officials Development Manager) Marc talked about the background data on the volumes of officials and training courses completed in the past few years

Chris Cohen (Competition Director and Technical Delegate) he spoke about his year of athletics.  His presentation was enlightening.

Minute of Silence: Paul Yates asked for a minute’s silence for our officials who died in the past 12 months and these were Diedre Clayton, Andrew Clatworthy and John Howley.  This should have included Ted Butcher too.

Terry Bailey, Malcolm Brooks and Andy Parker have decided to step down from the Northern Athletics Official Association committee. During the conference Paul Yates on behalf of the membership and committee thanked them for their decades of service to NAOA and Athletics.
