Preston 10 Mile Road Race Incorporating
The 2022 Northern Athletics Championship
Sunday November 20th Hutton Preston
Now in its 40th year this annual event was hosting its third Northern Athletics championship.
Starting from Hutton, the event has had several changes of course over the years, but the surrounding flat Lancashire landscape on the west side of Preston always assist in providing a fast course.
This year the N.A. men’s team race provided the closest competition, with the harriers of Blackburn and Rossendale battling it out as they passed the halfway point.
The Rossendale athlete was first past, but the three Blackburn athletes were all grouped together not far behind.
In the individual race, it was Vale Royal’s Ben McIntosh at the front, quickly followed by Blackpool’s Marco Parolin, and host club Preston’s Sam Evans
At the finish, the individual N.A. winners were straight forward and unchanged. Ben McIntosh 53.29, Marco Parolin 53.57, a terrific performance considering Marco had only arrived back from Italy on Saturday, and Sam Evans 54.20.
The men’s team race remained very close with both myself and the race referee leaving the result to be confirmed from John Scofield’s results. Rossendale had 2 athletes in before the 3 Blackburn athletes finished just ahead of the final Rossendale runner.
However, it was Rossendale who took the gold, Blackburn the Silver and Preston not surprisingly, the Bronze.
In the women’s race, the first N.A. affiliated club athlete to finish belonged to the host club Preston. Jamie Robinson clocked 63:55 for the gold medal, followed by Fay Hughes from the Wirral based club UTS, 64:15 and in the bronze position Alice Alcock, Wigan and District, 64.38.
Not surprisingly, host club Preston took the women’s team gold.
However, the most delighted and joyful team at the presentation were undoubtedly the women from Wesham Road Runners, who won the silver team medals. As the picture shows, the 3 of them were rather happy with their medals.
